Getting started
Start guide
Set up your Runtool account, import your training history, verify your zones, and plan your first workout.
Runtool is training software for ambitious runners and their coaches. This guide takes you from a new account to a working training week.
1. Create your account
Sign up at runtool.app/signup with your email address. Runtool sends you a one-time code — no password to remember.
During onboarding you choose how you train:
- Athlete — you plan and track your own training.
- Coach — you manage training for one or more athletes.
You can act as both. See Workspace for how coaches and athletes share the same views, and Coaching for the coach-side flow.
2. Import your training history
Your training history powers everything in Runtool: zones, training load, and the analysis views all read from your past workouts. Import it first.
Two ways to get your history in:
- Connect a device brand. Open Settings → Integrations and connect Polar or Suunto. New activities sync automatically from then on. See Integrations for what each brand supports.
- Upload an export. Download your activity archive from your current platform (Garmin, COROS, Suunto, or Polar all offer full-history exports) and drop the files on your athlete's Import page. Runtool accepts FIT, TCX, and GPX files in bulk. See Import.
Runtool processes each activity into a workout with a completion — structure, paces, heart rate, and training load included.
3. Verify your zones
Runtool prescribes training with pace and heart rate zones. After your history imports, open Settings → Zones for the athlete and check the proposed zones against how you actually train.
The fastest way to accurate zones: enter a recent race result. Runtool derives your six pace zones from it. See Zones for the zone model.
4. Plan your first workout
Open the Calendar and click a day. Type the workout the way you'd say it:
10km easy8x1km / 200m45min easy + 6x20s strides
Runtool parses the text into a structured workout with target paces from your zones and a planned training load. Adjust any part of the structure before saving. See Workouts.
5. Close the loop
When you run, your connected device syncs the activity and Runtool matches it to the planned workout automatically. The completion shows what you actually did against what was planned — pace per rep, time in zones, and session load.
